PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a polyester resin useful as a resin for white powder coating materials within a short time by performing the esterification reaction in the presence of a specified amount of an organotin compound, adding a specified antioxidant, etc., to the reaction system and performing the polycondensation reaction. SOLUTION: In producing a polyester resin having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.15-0.40 by using an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic diol as the main components, the esterification reaction is performed in the presence of 1.0×10<-4> to 8.0×10<-4> mol, per mol of the total acid component, of an organotin compound to a conversion of at least 90%, a phosphorus antioxidant and antimony trioxide in amounts satisfying the formulas; 1<=a<=40, and 5.0×10<-5> <=b<=6.0×10<-4> (wherein (a) is the molar ratio of the phosphorus antioxidant to the organotin compound, and (b) is the number of moles of the antimony trioxide per mol of the total acid component) are added to the reaction system, and the polycondensation reaction is performed. The organotin compound is desirably butyltin hydroxide oxide and/or dibutyltin oxide.
