A method for protecting internal combustion engines using a compound selected for its solubility or pseudo-solubility in liquid hydrocarbons, and added to the internal combustion engine fuel supply in a sufficient concentration to form a solution, sol, suspension or emulsion of a cerium compound, in such a way that the concentration of cerium in said fuel is of at least 5 and preferably at least 10 ppm (by weight). The method is useful for controlling corrosion.
