<p>A thermally insulating textile 2 adapted to provide a variable degree of thermal insulation dependent on ambient temperature comprising a laminate of two fabric layers 15, 15' having interposed a bulking layer 1. The bulking layer 1 is adapted to co-operate with the fabric layers 15, 15' to vary the gap therebetween upon departure in a desired direction of the textile temperature from a predetermined temperature. The bulking layer may (1) comprise a flexible substrate having a coating of a shape memory composition in a pattern (4), (2) a fabric substrate (8a, 8b, 8n) in contact with fibres of shape memory wires composition, (3) be in the form of shape memory wires (11) or (4) include an array of microgel containing bodies (13) embedded in a matrix (14) comprising a mobile dispersant containing viscous medium, the dispersant being moveable between the matrix and the microgel body in response to temperature changes of the fabric.</p> |
