Method for the preparation of a catalyst comprising at least one metal oxide on an inert support comprises: (1) obtaining a macroporous ceramic support by eg. cold sintering or extrusion of at least one clay and at least one combustible material, then optionally drying and then heating to a temperature between the clay shrinkage temperature and the clay incrustation temperature, at which the combustible material is burnt; (2) using at least one sol to impregnate the support with one or more metal oxides; and (3) drying the impregnated support. The catalyst material contains a microporous and/or mesoporous system inside the macroporous support. Catalysts prepared by this method are also claimed. Preferably stoneware clay is used and the combustible material is graphite and/or cellulose. The support is impregnated with at least one catalytically metal oxide chosen from nickel, cobalt, manganese, iron, copper, chromium or molybdenum oxides, which may be converted into a sulphide. Catalytically inert metal oxides may be used, preferably aluminium and/or titanium oxides. A catalytically active phase is deposited onto the catalyst material, preferably containing at least one oxide or sulphide of metals chosen from nickel, cobalt, manganese, iron, copper, chromium, molybdenum, platinum, palladium or rhodium. |
