METHOD FOR DECODING VIDEO BIT STREAM IN COMPLIANCE WITH MPEG STANDARD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the capacity of a memory used in the case of decoding a video bit stream in compliance with the MPEG standards. SOLUTION: A video bit stream of I and P pictures having respectively up part and down part where each has a top field and a bottom field is sequentially received and stored in a 1st memory, the up part of the stored I picture is decoded and stored in a 1st area of a 2nd memory and a down part is stored in a 2nd area of the 2nd memory. The up part of the stored P picture is decoded to indicate the top field of the I picture and the up part of the picture picture is stored in a 3rd area of the 2nd memory and the down part is decoded and the top field of the I picture is indicated, scanning lines of a prescribed number of the bottom field are awaited till the display and the down part of the picture picture to be decoded is stored in the 1st area.
