The staple has two arms (1,3) of different lengths, joined together at one end by a crosspiece (5). It is made in one piece, and one or both tips (2,4) can be hooked or harpoon-shaped to prevent migration. The crosspiece (5) can be bent into a loop for a fixing screw. The two arms of the staple can be bent into various curves, according to requirements. The staple is made from a material which is biocompatible with bone tissue, or one which possesses a shape memory effect. It can be made, e.g. from stainless steel wire 1.5 mm in diameter, with its longer arm measuring 9-10 cm and its crosspiece 10-15 mm.
