The component protection unit has a cable (10,11) which runs through the components (52,53,51,60) to be protected. The inner and outer section of the cable are connected via a resistor (2) at one end and via an electronic circuit (40) at the other end. The electronic circuit can detect an open circuit or short circuit, thus detecting theft without altering the components being protected.
