The bearing for the motor shaft of the starter motor (10) comprises a closed ended cylindrical seating (16) formed in the casing (26) of the starter. The bearing consists of a cylindrical ferrule (18) mounted within this cylindrical seating and within which the free end of the starter motor shaft is received. The cylindrical ferrule (18) and the seating (16) each include a channel for the evacuation of air, linking the base of this seating (16) to the outside. The channel may be formed radially, with a hole being formed in the structure of the casing.
