DEVICE AND METHOD FOR DISPLAYING MAP

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the visibility of relative information of an object from being lowered by always displaying character information at the position not to lose the relation with the object corresponding to that character information. SOLUTION: On a display screen 21 of a three-dimensional map, geographical features such as mountains and rivers are included in addition to buildings 22-26 and a road 27 and these map components are totally called objects. The character information is displayed inside an object display area corresponding to that character information (the area in which the objects are actually displayed on the display screen 21). In the figure, the objects 22-25 are displayed in the object display area corresponding to the character information such as the names of buildings or apartment houses. When it is judged that the character information can not be displayed in the object display area, the character information is displayed near that object display area. Namely, concerning the object 26, the character information showing the name of a hospital is displayed near the display area of the object 26 while using an extension line.
