PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface emission semiconductor laser which is capable of the polarization switching at high speed in a stabilized polarizing direction and easy to produce. SOLUTION: A surface emission semiconductor laser for emitting a laser beam in the layer thickness direction comprises on a substrate 101 an optical guide permitting two independent polarization modes, distributed reflectors 108, 109 giving equal oscillation wavelength to the two independent polarization modes, and a distorted quantum well active layer 104, i.e., a gain medium means which is capable of giving equal gains to the two independent polarization modes and specifies the polarizing direction. |
