A sensor which measures the CO2 content of gases includes a solid Li<+> containing electrolyte which is in dissociation equilibrium with the CO2 gas and a solid state reference electrode linked to it. The reference electrode consists of a transition metal oxide mixed with lithium and is of similar conductive mode. Also claimed is a method of producing a solid electrolyte by preparing a mixture such that Li3PO4 corresponds to 0.5 to 15 wt.% Li2CO3 and adding LiAlO2 so that it is 1 to 60 wt.% of the total mixture, fusing the mixture with stirring at 700-770 deg C, allowing the mixture to solidify, grinding it to a powder which is then formed and sintered at 670-720 deg C.
