Rheometer for setting duroplastic simulating processing conditions

This new measurement procedure determines the viscosity of duroplastic moulding compositions whilst fluid, but hardening, during model processing. A turning rotor experiences resistance used to derive a torque signal. The compound (38) is introduced into the kneading chamber (30) containing the rotor (20) under high pressure with such rapidity, that it is completely filled, without heating. The chamber may be disassembled. Filling takes less than 15-25% of the total time. Pressure is maintained during kneading and the mass is heated to the hardening temperature. The rotor turns, oscillates or swings at 0.1-10 rpm or Hertz as appropriate. Reciprocation occurs through 0.4 deg -4 deg . Drive energy, speed and torque are measured. On achieving maximum drive energy or a limiting torque, the motion is adjusted. On hardening the machine is taken down, and the compound removed. Also claimed is the corresponding apparatus.
