An image recording system for evaluating analytical test elements has a positioning unit (8) into or onto which the test elements are set, an objective lens system (5) which reproduces an image of the test elements on a CCD-chip (3) and an evaluation unit which evaluates the image on the CCD-chip or displays it on a monitor. This image recording system makes it possible to evaluate a plurality of test elements of different sizes at different wavelengths without making it necessary for the user to focus the system. The lens system used is a demagnification optic with at least 0.7 aperture at the image side and less than 15 mm distance between the CCD-chip and the nearest lens of the lens system. Moreover, the distance between the nearest lens of the lens system and the CCD-chip is held constant at at least 10 mu m to ensure a sufficient sharpness. A compensator is disclosed for maintaining constant this distance.
