The coupler (3) has flanges (4,5) for insertion between a rectangular and an elliptical waveguide. It incorporates three stages (S1-S3) of substantially rectangular cross-section, with rounded corners and with different internal widths, optimised by computation from a reciprocal orthogonal series expansion. The dimensions are chosen to suit the fundamental wave mode, and other modes, so that only the modes conveying a signal are propagated into an adjoining waveguide, while the remaining modes are substantially cancelled by heterodyning. |
