A differential assembly for a transfer case or other motor vehicle application has a pair of output side bevel gears 184 which flank a centrally disposed spider 170 driven by an input shaft 32 through splines 176 and having a plurality of spokes 178 and bevel pinion gears 180 disposed thereon. An annular member 158 retains the bevel gears on the spider. In a first embodiment, the annular member is retained on the spider by cooperating elongate slots 160 in the member which receive the shafts of the spider and a snap ring 168 fits in a groove 166 which extends about the circumference of the annular member. In an alternative embodiment (Figs 7 and 8) the pinion gears include projecting spherical surfaces which are complementary to and seat within spherical recesses on the inner surface of the annular member.
