A laminated object manufacturing system (1) includes an X-Y plotter (20) positioned above a work table (130), the work table (130) being vertically movable. The X-Y plotter (20) includes a forming tool (46) including a laser (72) for forming a layer (56) from a sheet of material (36) positioned on the work table (130). A bonding tool (48) is mounted and controlled to translate across the work table (130) and apply a controlled lamination force and a controlled amount of heat to the layer (56). The X-Y plotter device (20) and the bonding tool (48) are mounted to translate along rails (52a, 52b) mounted on a common reference frame (44).
