The printer includes a transporter for the transport of a paper, and a pulse generation unit which produces transport pulses synchronized with a predetermined interval of the transport of the paper. A front edge sensor unit (126) determines the front edge of the paper and produces a front edge signal. A comparator unit compares a time interval between the front edge signal and a transport pulse with a threshold value (T1, T2). A control unit (24) controls the transporter and a printing process dependent on the transport pulse. The control unit changes the point in time of the start of the printing process dependent on the result of the comparison, whereby the threshold value is adjustable, and is stored in non-volatile memory (127 EEPROM).
