The method involves making a sealed fluid connection between the nozzle plate (101) and an ink tank (20). Ink is fed from the ink tank through the outlet opening (102) of the nozzle plate into the ink reservoir (105) in cycles with alternate operation and stopping of a feed pump (40). The delivery of ink to the reservoir is stopped when a certain switch-off criterion is reached. Ink is returned into the ink tank until a defined vacuum pressure is reached in the reservoir, then the fluid connection is removed.
