The adjacent chain links (1,1') are both punched flat but trapezoidally curved to the hammer shaped (16) formation. The legs (161,162) on the bevelled end of each link fit into the opening (150) of the stirrup (15') at the end of the respective adjoining link (1'). The hole (110') is made into the straight part (11') of each link on its bevelled end, complete with opening and stirrup. The hammer is prevented from escaping from the opening by compressing the stirrup-fitted link round the hole (110). In a variant, every second link is provided with two stirrups and centrally placed hole as compared with the interposed link which has two hammers fitting into the link stirrups to the sides of this link. Once the hammer shaped legs have been fitted into the adjoining link stirrup hole (150,150'), the adjoining link stirrup is transversely compressed to join the links movably, but non-releasably to one another.
