The system includes a transmission network which provides at least one message channel, and at least one distress call transmitting device which reads distress call data from a memory card by device of a card reading device, and transmits these data in a distress call message on the message channel. At least one distress call reception device receives the distress call message, evaluates it to trigger at least one alarm function, and/or forwards the distress call data to an alarm main office of the system, which is connected to the transmission network. The system is formed as an emergency telephone system which can be operated with a memory card usable for general purposes e.g. with a membership card of an automobile association or a bank card, and powered by solar energy supply with RF (radio) overlay e.g. via satellite link.
