A bulk supply of the small items e.g. pills or tablets enters an inclined tube (1) at an inlet (3) and descends from there to a process at a lower level. The passage through the tube incorporates a series of pliable flaps (2) which arrest (4) the descent of the product until a sufficient weight has accumulated behind the flap to force a passage, allowing the product to fall to the next flap.
