<p>The placement of repeater or base station antennas in a wireless communications distribution network is optimized using field measurements. Test antennas (30) are placed at a number of sites within the coverage area, and the signal from each test antenna (30) is measured at different locations within the coverage area (20). Coverages provided by different arrangements of antennas (30) are simulated, and an optimal arrangement is chosen by maximizing a utility function that depends on the quality of the coverage within the area and on the cost of installing an arrangement. A data base of architectural categories (building plans) and measurement results for each category allows coverage simulation using stored field measurements. A new building is matched to the closest architectural categories in the database, and the field measurements from the component categories are used to simulate coverage in the new building.</p> |
