The instrument has a display plane (4,5) with a scale (10) and a pointer (1). In the region of the scale the display plane is in the form of a diffused surface (4). The pointer is formed by a pivoting laser beam directed at an angle to the diffused surface using vertically incident light illumination. The display area can be a liquid crystal screen (3) and can have a display panel in which the laser beam projected on to it is reflected at an angle corresponding to the angle of incidence. A diaphragm can be provided in the path of the reflected beam and the side of the display plane facing the observer can be a transparent plate with a roughened surface in the scale region.
