PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a boride ceramic having high strength and high toughness by molding a mixture or TiB2 or ZrB2 with a predetermined quantity of Ni, NiMo or Cr and sintering the molding at high temperature in vacuum or in an inert-gas atmosphere. SOLUTION: This boride ceramic is obtained by mixing titanium boride or zirconium boride with 0.01-3vol.% of Ni, NiMo or Cr powder, then molding the mixture, and sintering the produced molding at 1600 deg.C or higher temperature in vacuum or inert atmosphere. When a mixture of Ni and Mo is added to the boride is NiMo alloy powder or a mixture of Ni and Mo powder at a Ni-to-Mo ratio of (30-80):(70-20). After the molding, the molding is subjected to reducing treatment 700-800 deg.C in hydrogen atmosphere to remove oxides on the power surfaces prior to the sintering, so that sintering quality of the product can be noticeably improved. The obtained boride ceramics are useful as a jig material for production of aluminum cans, material for abrasion resistant parts, tools, jigs for hot metal extrusion, and jigs for metal bath, etc. |
