PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a precursor of an intermediate for a fluoran dye in a short time and in high yield with little byproducts by reacting an acylanisidine compound with an aromatic halogen compound. SOLUTION: This diphenylamine compound is expressed by formula I (R<1> and R<3> are each a 1-8C alkyl; R<2> and R<4> are each H or a 1-8C alkyl), e.g., N-acetyl-4-(N',N'-dimethylamino)-3'-methoxydiphenylamine, etc. The compound is obtained by reacting an acylanisidine compound of formula II with an aromatic halogen compound of formula III (X is a halogen) in the presence of a copper compound and a tertiary amine compound, e.g., at 150-200 deg.C for 3-7 hours. |
