An audio signal visual display device for random access editing, comprises apparatus for sampling the audio signal and filtering to divide the sampled signal into a plurality of frequency ranges. The power spectra of the audio signal in each of the plurality of frequency ranges are analyzed and the power spectra corresponding to each of the frequency ranges are mapped to a display to provide a visual, colour representation of the sampled frequencies and amplitudes of the audio signal. The device has particular applicability for editing at slow speeds or statically.
