PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a heat insulating material, comprising a double salt of a basic aluminum carbonate having a dawsonite type crystal structure and capable of absorbing heat rays from a body to be insulated from heat, preventing the heat rays from diffusing to the outside of the system and imparting excellent heat insulating properties thereto. SOLUTION: This heat insulating material comprising a double salt of a basic aluminum carbonate having a dawsonite type crystal structure and a composition of preferably the formula mAl2 O3 .(n/p)M2/p O.X.kH2 O [X is an inorganic or an organic anion consisting essentially of carbonate radical; M is an alkali (ne earth) metal; (m) is a number of 0.3-1: (n) is a number of 0.3-2; (k) is a number of 0.5-4; (p) is the valence of the metal M] and. M is preferably sodium and X is the carbonate radical in the formula.
