PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find an unknown IFN inducer. SOLUTION: In this invention, a single stranded DNA originating from phage M13 has been found to be markedly effective as an IFN inducer. Within 4 hours after the single stranded DNA originating from phage M13 (M13 DNA) is given, the potency of serum interferon (IFN, mainlyβ-type) increases from a scarcely detectable level to a high level as much as about 700IU/ml and the IFN can be detected for a long time as much as 12 hours after the dosage. Further, in the case that the DNA is added to a spleen culture medium, the induction of a large amount of IFN at a level of 1050IU/ml can be detected from the scarcely detectable level. Accordingly, the M13 DNA has been proved to be a potent IFN inducer.
