PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spherical glass excellent in alkali resistance and having fine pore property corresponding to the purpose, particularly the same separation performance as that of silica gel in the case of using it as a filler for a liquid column chromatography and to provide the producing method. SOLUTION: The alkali resistant spherical glass is composed of at least ZrO2 and SiO2 , contains 10-50mol% ZrO2 and has 1-100μm average particle diameter, 3-20nm average fine pore diameter, 0.5-2.0ml/g fine pore volume and 200-500m<2> /g specific surface area and the production process is composed of following steps. (a) A step for producing a multiple alkoxide by adding at least a Zr alkoxide to a Si alkoxide partially hydrolyzed by an acid. (b) A step for producing a multiple alkoxide polymer by further hydrolyzing the multiple alkoxide with the acid. (c) A step for dispersing the alkoxide polymer in water to make it spherical and gelating the result with an alkali. (d) A step for treating the gel under a high temp. and high pressure. (e) A step for drying the gel. (f) A step for heat treating the gel at 400-900 deg.C.
