PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a glyoxal compound useful as an intermediate, etc., for a modifier for a fiber, a finishing agent for a paper, a hardening agent for soil, etc., in good yield and in high selectivity. SOLUTION: The objective glyoxal compound is obtained by oxidizing ethylene glycol in an organic solvent (an organic compound containing nitrogen and having 100-250 deg.C boiling point, e.g. N,N-dimethylformamide) in the presence of a catalyst (a copper compound such as copper sulfate supported on or added to a platinum supporting catalyst such as platinum on active carbon) by a gas containing oxygen. Preferably, the partial pressure of the oxygen at the time of the reaction is 10<-2> to 1MPa and the reaction temperature is 50 to 150 deg.C. Moreover, preferably, the used amount of the platinum in the catalyst is 1×10<-6> to 1mol per mol ethylene glycol and the amount of the copper in the copper compound is preferably in 1×10<-2> to 10mol per mol platinum.
