PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing medicines such as Parkinson's disease-treating medicine. SOLUTION: The trans isomer of a compound of formula I (R<1> is H, a lower alkyl, etc.; R<2> is H, a lower alkyl, an aryl, etc.; X is H, a halogen, etc.,) is reduced to produce the objective piperidine carbinol compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is preferably a compound of formula III (Z is a halogen), and the above reaction is carried out e.g. by the use of a reducing agent such as lithium hydride in an etheric solvent such as tetrahydrofuran at a temperature of 0-100 deg.C. The compound of formula III is a new compound, and is obtained by reducing the cyano group of a cyanoglutaric acid derivative of formula IV (R<3> is H, a lower alkyl, an aryl, etc.,) and simultaneously intramolecularly cyclizing the obtained molecule. |
