Combustor (1) comprises air nozzles (14) and fuel nozzles (13) near its base that form a fluidised bed (5) of combustion gases and fuel particles within the combustor. Their combustion heats the heat exchanger tubes (6), which in turn generate steam for use with a power plant, as the mixt. of fluidised gas, particles and air bubbles rise through the combustor. At least one bed distributor (15) is used at the base of the bed to spread this mixt. more uniformly across the heat exchagner and to create turbulent flow in order to increase the thermal efficiency of the process. Unburnt fuel particles and gases emerging from the top of the bed are spread horizontally in a turbulent manner towards the upper sides of the bed, to burn them off in this region, using a freeboard distributor (16). This also increases the thermal efficiency of the system. The mixt. and bubbles are spread more uniformly throughout the bed by forming horizontal, tapered or conical sections with the lower bed distributor (15) and upper freeboard distributor (16) respectively and placing the apexes of these sections directly above the bubble flow from the fuel nozzles (13). |
