The security door lock and release has a remotely controlled electromagnet (32) and a mechanical unit (30) made up of a hook (50) with an open recess (54). The motion of the hook is linked to the movement of the electromagnet. The recess in the hook co-operates with a pin (74) fixed to the corresponding vertical upright of the door frame. The mechanical unit has support for each pin to absorb the vertical forces. The hook is mounted so that it pivots between two extreme positions, one clear of the pin and the other engaging the pin. The hook absorbs the horizontal forces.
