An ultra-sound area surveillance system has several ultrasonic transducer units all of which directionally radiate a field of ultrasonic waves and receive reflected ultrasonic waves. An evaluation device (1) evaluates the reflected ultrasonic waves received by the ultrasonic transducer units to detect objects located within a predeterminable surveillance area. The ultrasonic transducer units (W1 to W12) are closely spaced apart so that their directions of radiation fan out. The transducer units may for example be arranged in a semicircle in two superimposed planes. The invention is for example useful to monitor the surroundings of vehicles or stationary machines for any approaching objects.
