The invention concerns a method of producing thin plates from natural or synthetic stone, in which method an original plate (1) is produced with at least the double plate thickness, at least one surface of the original plate is provided with a carrier layer (4, 5) and then a plate provided with the carrier layer is separated. According to the invention, in order to simplify this method and render it more economical, a pane of glass (4, 5) which remains as the surface layer on the outer side of the separated plate is used as the carrier layer.
