In a multi-layer sequence welding, the widths of the welding line and the gap between works (A, B) are measured using a laser sensor mounted on a robot, while the welding of a first layer being executed, so that a welding torch mounted on the robot may move along the welding line and the welding conditions may correspond to the measured gap width. This gap width is stored together with the welding line data in storage means so that the welding torch may be moved along the welding line and the welding conditions may correspond to the gap width by using the data for the welding of the second and later layers.
