Each of two parallel sections (1,2) of the waste gas cleaning system for internal combustion engines (4) alternately adsorbs and desorbs nitrogen oxides. Gases leaving the section operating in the adsorption mode pass onwards. Gases leaving the other section, which is operating in desorption mode, are recycled to an intake (15) of the engine. Suitable valving and pipework (10-14,16) accomplish this. There is an oxidation catalyst (3) upstream of the adsorbers. Close to the engine, this oxidises nitrogen oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Before the adsorbers is a main flow branching (7). Parallel to this, a shorter and/or more efficiently thermally-insulated side-stream (6) branches off. Control valves (8, 9) on these branches feed main flow to the adsorbing section, and side-stream to the desorbing section. |
