Measurement probe for organic contaminants in water and earth by fluorescent spectroscopy

The probe has a light source (1) with spectral filters (2) between it and a window (3) which is in direct contact with the surrounding earth or water. The exciting light causes any aromatics or hydrocarbons within the medium to fluoresce and this radiation is filtered through further spectral filters (4) to a photomultiplier (6), which in turn is connected to a power supply and amplifier stages (9). Following the amplifier stages, sample and hold circuits and A-D converters are connected. A microprocessor (10) controls the measurement process, stores and processes digitised measurements. The probe is connected via power cable and data interface to an external device.
