A ring-shaped sealing element (16) for sealingly closing a ring-shaped gap between the inner surface of a cylindrical wall and a concentric cylindrical piston which slides therein in the axial direction has two separate ring-shaped, axially adjacent parts (42, 44), of which the first part (42) is made of an elastomer material and the second part (44) of a stiff material. The radial dimension S of the projection (46) equals maximum 70 % of the sum of the wall thicknesses Si + Sa.
