1531687 Picking up floating matter INSTITUTE FUR TEXTIL-UND FASERFORSCHUNG STUTTGART 10 March 1977 [7 July 1976 10 March 1976] 10283/77 Heading B1D Floating oil is picked up from a body of water by at least one endless band 12' of needle felted polypropylene or other fibrous oleophilic material, which absorbs the oil where it enters the water and after passing round roller 16' lifts the oil to a point where it is squeezed out by driven rollers 13, 14. In Fig. 3 five bands 12' are entrained round rollers 14, 16', 45, the bands being less than 20 cms wide and spaced 1 cm apart laterally, rollers 16' and 45 being grooved to guide the bands. This construction avoids the creasing which a single wide band would suffer. If the oil layer is thin, the oil is mainly squeezed laterally on to the sections of rollers 13, 14 between the bands, and scrapers 49 direct it into vessels 29' which are located in the dotted line positions with edges 50 engaging the rollers and edges 51 engaging the bands. If the oil layer is thick the oil mainly runs down the outsides of the bands, and vessels 29' are located in the solid line positions so that edges 50 direct the oil into them. Switching the vessels from one position to the other could be automatically controlled by an oil sensor. Blades 47 are primarily to remove solids from the bands, but these blades and also edges 51 in the dotted line position of vessels 29' form chambers which catch any oil running down the bands and redirect it into the bands. An alternative blade 47' redirects such oil to where the bands enter the water. In an alternative construction (Figs. 1, 2 not shown), two bands are arranged with their rising runs face to face. Bands are preferably of unmodified polypropylene, alone or mixed with polyester or polypropylene or other plastics rendered hydrophobic by silicon products. Needled felt (without binder) is preferred, but knitted or woven material consolidated by binders may be used. The band may be reinforced by an embedded net or mesh or may be enclosed in a mesh envelope. The device can be mounted on a ship, to pick up oil at sea, or across a stream or in a settling tank for removing oil from machine tool coolant. |
