SELF-ALIGNING HANDCUFF KEY

A handcuff key (10) having a shank (12) on which is mounted a paddle (20) offset from the end of the shank (12) so that a portion of the shank (12) protudes beyond the end of the paddle (20). The key (10) has a first asymmetrical gripping surface (16) as well as a second cylindrical gripping surface (24). The gripping surfaces are formed of an elastomer while the offset paddle (20) and shank (12) are formed of metal. The key (40) is also provided with a quick-release cap (48) which snaps over a double-lock stem (14) extending from the key (40). In an alternative embodiment, the quick-release cap (48) is provided with an offset key ring (54) to permit the key (40) to hang substantially vertical from an officer's uniform or key ring during storage.
