<p>A gas turbine engine (1) having improved output horsepower and a method of achieving it. The engine has, in order, a low pressure compressor (2), a high pressure compressor (3), a combustor (4), a high pressure turbine (5) and a low pressure turbine (6). The high pressure turbine (5) is drivingly connected to both compressors (2 and 3) with a speed reducing gear box (19) therebetween. An intercooler (22) between the compressors (2 and 3) reduces the horsepower requirement of the high pressure compressor (3). Flow from the combustor (4) is sufficiently heated to enable the high pressure turbine (5) to drive both compressors (2 ans 3) with the output horsepower of the low pressure turbine (6) devoted to the engine load. <IMAGE></p> |
