The box (12) is assembled from a synthetic body (22) recessed into the ground, a circular metallic cover plate (15), and a seal (28) which has an annular outer portion (28A) and a central portion (28B) joined to it by a root zone incorporating the hinge of the metallic lid (16). The outer portion provides the external lip (19) under the rim of the cover plate, which has two pairs of studs (44) on its underside engaging in holes (45) through the rim (23) of the body. The inner portion has the internal lip (20) around the edges of the square-section recess (14) which accommodates the socket.
