An apparatus for receiving an image signal is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a vertical synchronization signal separator(34) for separating the vertical synchronization signal from the inputted image signal; a composite synchronization signal generator(36) for generating a window signal which can mask the composite signal and for processing the operation when the separated vertical synchronization signal is inputted; a character signal generator(38) for generating the character signal corresponding to the character information displayed on the screen synchronized with the composite synchronization signal generated at the composite synchronization generator; a first switch for switching the inputted image signal using the widow signal and the character signal; a second switch for switching the inputted composite synchronization signal using the widow signal; a third switch for switching the inputted composited signal using the character signal; and a mixer(40) for mixing the output signals from the first, the second and the third switch to provide the mixed signal to an image output apparatus. Thereby, the character signal can be displayed on the image output apparatus, even if the synchronization of the image signal is not stable or the image signal is not inputted.
