Device for cooling an extruded object (8) includes a chamber separated into regions (13-18) by vertical support diaphragms (34, 36-39) through apertures in which the object is guided. A vacuum pump (25) is connected via an exhaust pipe (26) and throttle valves (30) to each region (13-18). The partial vacuum established in each region is higher than that in the proceeding region in the extrusion direction (4). Coolant fluid enters the chamber via inlet pipe (58) and under the action of the partial vacuums passes sequentially through the regions (13-18) where it washes around and cools the object (8). A longitudinal web (44) over or under which the object is guided subdivides each region. Coolant passes between adjacent regions (13-18) through channels (52-55) below a chamber base plate (43) or through channels formed in the base plate. |
