[Classes 96 and 140] A record material includes a base sheet having thereon a coating consisting of a continuous phase containing as a discontinuous phase droplets of a marking fluid including a low-viscosity, non-hygroscopic oil or similar substance which is non-hygroscopic and immiscible with water carrying a marking substance. The record material may be made by mixing the marking substance in the oil or the like, mixing this in a dryable solution of a solid coating substance to form an emulsion, applying the emulsion to the base sheet and drying. The marking substance may be a colouring agent, e.g. pigments, staining liquids or liquids which cause a stain by chemical reaction or by contact with another surface. The paper or web so coated may be used as a manifold sheet by laying the coated side on an underlying sheet and applying localized pressure to the manifold. As specified liquid emulsions are disclosed: (1) a continuous phase of gelatine, saponin and water with the discontinuous phase paraffin oil, chlorinated diphenyl-phthalide and thymol; (2) a continuous phase of methyl cellulose and water with the above discontinuous phase without the thymol. Specified oils are paraffin, naphthenic, castor, neatsfoot; lard and olive oils, chlorinated diphenyls, tributyl phosphate and ethyl-phthalyl-ethyl-glycollate. Other marking chemicals specified are Sudan IV and carbon black, while specified emulsifying agents which may be added to stabilize the internal phase are thymol, phytosterol and chlolesterol and solid forming agents for the external phase are gelatin, casein and methyl cellulose.
