PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a display capable of visualizing even at low temp. and under bright environment by providing a first display mode capable of a multi- color display and a second display mode limiting the number of colors. SOLUTION: In this first display mode, a single primary color, a plurality of primary colors ore many middle colors by contriving a driving waveform are displayed. In the second display mode, through two sub-fields f1, f2 consists of three sub-fields fR, fG, fB, light source lighting signals Lr, Lg, Lb of R, G, B exist in a lighting level all together in all sub-fields. Then, since the light sources of respective colors are lighted simultaneously, multi-color aren't displayed, as a data signal, the signal having the same level in respective sub-fields such as the data signal Db1 at a black display time, the data signals Dw at a white display time is used. Thus, the necessity responding at every sub-field is eliminated, and cumulative response of a liquid crystal is used, and even the liquid crystal with a slow response speed becomes possible to display.
