Water softening mechanism in dishwashers includes a salt container (1) for preparing the salt solution and a softener container (2) located in the water supply wherein an ion exchange is carried out to regenerate the contents through the measured supply of the salt. The closure (5) to the salt container has a break point preferably in the form of a reduction in the wall thickness which responds to the intermal pressure. In this way any excess pressure which may occur over the closure to the salt container can be blown without danger into the machine container. Since in the case of a reduction in the wall thickness the closure would have to be replaced if the excess pressure had caused it to blow it is possible to replace this break point by a valve-type insert which can then be reset.
