Diethyl-resorcinol prepn. from diacetyl-resorcinol - by hydrogenation using opt. supported nickel catalyst pref. in soln. or suspension

(I), is prepd. by hydrogenating 4,6-diacetyl-resorcinol, (II), is the presence of an opt. supported Ni catalyst, pref. at 70-90 (72-85) degrees C. (I) has bactericidal activity and is a chemical intermediate. Yields of (I) can reach 99% within disclosed temp. range. E. g. hydrogenation of (II) at 85 degrees C yielded 98% (I) and only 1.7% 4,6-diethyl-cyclohexanediol (III), as by-product, compared to 55.4% (I) and 43.1% (III) at 95 degrees C, and 92.9% (III) at 120 degrees C.
