Class 53 A method of "forming" an accumulator of the kind in which the electrodes are separated by semi-permeable diaphragms maintained under compression and impregnated with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide consists in first submitting the accumulator to a charging operation and then discharging it at a very rapid rate. The first charging operation may be performed slowly, the time taken to completely discharge the accumulator being one-twentieth of the time taken in charging. The electrodes may consist of zinc and silver and lithium oxide or hydroxide may be added to the electrolyte or to the silver powder forming the positive electrode.
